Senior Men - Planning Meeting |

Please make note that a meeting will be held at the H.B.U.S.C on Monday the 8th of September starting at 7.00.p.m. This meeting is intended to give clubs the opportunity to provide comment regarding the format and functioning of the senior men's competition in 2008 and to offer input into the direction football in Hervey Bay takes next year at a senior men's level.
For the purpose of establishing an environment where issues can be discussed effectively, each club is requested to limit their representation to two. Please seek out the members of your clubs who fill positions of responsibility for their views. I would hope that you would give these matters some serious thought and that we can approach this meeting in a spirit that puts the interests of football in Hervey Bay first.
One coach contributed the following:
The Fraser Coast League has been a great success. We must maintain it to provide a good competition base for our up and coming juniors. All clubs have been competitive this year and should look forward to improving over the coming seasons as the comps even out. It has been so much better playing against 6 other clubs rather than 3!
Hervey Bay (& Maryborough) cant afford to go backwards to local comps as that would only erode our standards and also our strength in Wide Bay Competition and Administration by allowing the stronger CA’s such as Bundy and Gympie to dominate football & management in our zone.
- Maintain Fraser Coast League in Div 1 and Div 2. – Allow or insist each club (HB or M’boro) to have one (1) Div 1 AND one (1) Div 2 to qualify for comp.
NOTE : In the case where a club only has 1 team however, they may approach another club (with one team) and may agree to provide a supporting spot in the other Division therefore providing a Div 1 & Div 2 fixture in each Division between the two clubs.
- Each may have only one Div 1 and one Div 2 to “even up” the number of teams between the Divisions unless a third team fills a gap in the Division 2 draw only behind a single team club that plays Div 1.
- I would not promote or support a veterans league (at this stage) as this will only provide an “excuse” for clubs not to play in Fraser Coast Leagues as they will nominate for that rather than DIV 1 & 2. Either don’t have a Veterans or to have a team in the Veterans you must field a Div 1 AND a Div 2 team to be able to participate and its to played on a Sunday so it wont clash with other fixtures and training nights.
- There should be everything from results, cards and disciplinary notices exchanged between the two registrars in a formal and set procedure. This should all happen on the Sunday and/or Monday and be dealt with by the registrars collectively rather than “ you look after your bit and I’ll do mine”.
Or, Registrar for each CA looks after registrations only in each CA. but one separate person appointed as Competition Secretary who does all the draws and collects and correlates all results. This person can also consult with BOTH the CA’s Presidents (or whoever is agreed upon) to determine suspensions then forward this on to the CA’s registrar. The Comp Sec. can also handle the promotion of leagues by providing results etc to media,(Channel 7 and the Chronicle). We need to lift the profile of the FCL’s Disciplinary Proceedings must involve both CA’s irrespective of where the player/coach is registered. The two CA’s together must decide on disciplinary matters each week and the Disciplinary Tribunal must consist of two Hervey Bay reps and two Maryborough reps as agreed in the rules. It is leaving the CA open to criticism if Hervey Bay decides HB matters and Maryborough decide M’boro matters as it will be seen as inequitable.
- Draw to remain fair and equitable as it was this year ie. Home and away Div 1 and Div 2 club teams at same venue.
Finals to be played as it is this year with the added clarification that the Division 2 Grandfinal is played at the same venue and preceding the Division 1 final irrespective of who is playing in it.
- Under 18 go back to Under 17 …… this will mean 17 Year old will play Div 2 (or Div1) rather that playing Under 18 and not Mens. This will provide an additional age to Mens who cant play 18’s therefore have to play mens increasing numbers (all be it only slightly) in Mens and decrease the number of 17 year old that play Tuesday and Saturday which can be a bit too much.
- Womens FCL should be introduced along the same lines as Men even two Divisions can be considered.
- Rep Football as we have discussed previously needs to be played as a replacement fixture to the current comps ie. Played on a Saturday instead of normal competition games. Players will not play Saturday Night then back-up consistently on the Sunday. It can be promoted as REP games….it needs to have a bit of prestige or importance placed on it to get players to want to play and people to watch not treated as an additional comp with little attraction.
- Alternatively I would like to see us try a Club based Knock out Competition. Top 4 Clubs from all 4 CA’s are nominated. The 4 highest finishing club in the Div 1 (they earn the spot from the previous season) from each CA play the first round of the comp. There are 5 mens clubs here 5 in M’boro, 6 in Bundy & 6 in Gympie, that is 22 clubs in all – but 16 Clubs qualify and play first round therefore 8 matches drawn from a hat all on one Saturday. Venue decided by the first drawn for each match but 2 games in one venue only. Winners stay in Losers knocked out. Next round 8 clubs, then 4 then the Grand Final between last two. Or however we can make it work………………This is only 4 Saturdays out of the season and if we can get a sponsor offer some prize money.
